Ross Ewing has dedicated his career to family law, and his experience in the field is broad and deep. He has personally handled more than 1,600 family law cases in Central Kentucky. His experience includes every type of case that comes before a family court judge – from divorces and adoptions to domestic violence and child protection.
Ross is also an experienced and active family law mediator. Many attorneys and individuals in Central Kentucky already come to him to act as a neutral third party in their family law disputes. Ross’s experience, legal knowledge, and listening skills will make him an effective family court judge.
Ross Ewing is a proven leader among family law attorneys. For more than five years, Ross has served on the committee that writes Kentucky’s family court rules. He has personally written several of the rules that family court judges apply day in and day out. He frequently speaks and writes on cutting-edge topics in family law. Ross will bring his deep knowledge and passion for family law to the bench.
Ross is an established leader in Lexington, active in several community organizations. Ross is particularly proud of his long involvement at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning. Ross began volunteering at Carnegie as a high-school math tutor in 2010. Over time his involvement grew and deepened, and he recently completed two terms as Chairman of the Carnegie Center’s Board of Trustees.
Additionally, Ross serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors at Micah Legal – an innovative legal clinic providing low-cost, sliding-scale family law representation in Lexington to those who need it most. Ross has proven his dedication and commitment to Lexington, and he will be equally as committed and dedicated to the role of family court judge.
Ross Ewing has dedicated his career to making Kentucky family law work for families of all shapes and sizes, and he will bring that experience and dedication to the bench. It has been 20 years since family court was created in Kentucky, and families have changed a great deal in that time. Ross will be well prepared to address the needs of modern families.
For example, Ross was involved in many efforts around legal marriage equality and made headlines in 2014 when he successfully handled one of the first cases in the state to allow a legally-married same-sex couple to adopt. Ross is truly committed to seeing all families succeed, and he will bring this commitment to the bench.
Ross is also uniquely prepared to address the challenges of modern families. The ongoing opioid crisis, for example, plays out in Kentucky family courts every day and leaves many children in the care of grandparents and other family members. Ross has volunteered for several years at the Kentucky Grandparents as Parents conference and other organizations in Central Kentucky dedicated to addiction recovery and supporting families of addicts. Ross is also very familiar with the unique challenges of refugees and other recent arrivals to our community, having volunteered countless hours of pro bono representation helping these families make Lexington their home.
Ross understands that children thrive in safe, stable homes and that those homes come in many shapes and sizes. He will put this experience and understanding to work for Fayette County as a family court judge.
Ross’s remarks at his Campaign Kickoff event November 18, 2021
Ross Ewing is a life-long Kentuckian, born and raised in Owensboro. Like many people, he came to Lexington to attend UK and never left. Ross earned his bachelor’s degree in French in 2005 and his law degree in 2008. He was active in several organizations on campus and played in the band. UK continues to be near and dear to Ross’s heart. He is a Life Fellow of the UK Alumni Association and serves on multiple scholarship committees for the university.
Ross Ewing has dedicated his entire professional career to Kentucky family law. After graduation, he worked as a law clerk for a now-retired family court judge. Ross saw first-hand all that the job of family court judge actually entails – all of the legal and administrative work that happens behind the scenes, in addition to the considerable amount of time a judge spends in court.
Ross then went into private practice, where has focused on family law for more than 13 years. Ross’s experience in the field includes practicing at two of Lexington’s leading law firms and serving for several years as a court-appointed attorney for children and parents in dependency, neglect, and abuse court.
In 2017, Ross earned and advanced certificate in divorce and family law mediation from Northwestern University. Since then, he has become a trusted mediator of family law disputes. With a reputation as a compassionate person and a good listener, Ross believes that the law and all of its nuances and technicalities should work for real people with real-world problems.
Outside of work and community commitments, Ross enjoys traveling, hiking, and singing in his church choir. He is married to David Cupps, a business management consultant. They met volunteering for a local non-profit and have been together for over 15 years.
